This is an unpublished letter to the Age from mid-August 2017. There was very little reporting of this episode.
Amidst the parliamentary fuss about citizenship on Tuesday, there was brief excitement when the opposition won a vote on an amendment to a government bill on the Great Barrier Reef (The Age, 16/8/17). The amendment, subsequently overturned by the government, stated that the government was failing to protect the reef and failing to act on climate change. It should be noted that the member for Melbourne, Adam Bandt, moved to insert a clause which would stop the Adani Carmichael coal mine. This motion received only three votes, those of Bandt, Andrew Wilkie and Cathy McGowan and was defeated by the combined numbers of government and Labor MPs. Opponents to the motion to stop the mine included the Labor members for Wills and Batman who have stated they oppose the mine.
